Walking Back Into the Classroom: Shambhu's Story

Shambhu Yadav Nepali, a 46-year-old man from Dhangadhimai–04, Siraha, lives with bilateral polio, a physical disability that has long affected his mobility. For years, his greatest struggle was simple movement — covering longer distances and navigating independently within his school premises had become an everyday challenge. To address this, he was provided with a wheelchair, a vital piece of mobility support that opened the door to greater independence and eased the difficulties he had quietly carried for so long. At just three years old, Shambhu Yadav Nepali was diagnosed with bilateral post-polio residual paralysis, a condition that would shape the course of his life. Yet what could have been a story of limitation instead became one of quiet determination. For 23 years, Shambhu has devoted himself to teaching, and for the past two and a half years, he has served as the Principal of Shree Janata Basic School — a role earned through dedication, not despite his disability, but alongside it. Before receiving mobility support, everyday movement was a daily struggle for Shambhu. Simple tasks — walking from one room to another at home, or crossing the school compound to reach his classroom — demanded far more effort and energy than they should have. His endomorphic body type added further strain to each movement, making independent mobility increasingly difficult over time. On 26 June 2025, a routine assessment by Prerana Rehabilitation Center brought Shambhu's condition and needs into clear focus. Recognizing the impact mobility support could have on both his professional and personal life, Dhangadhimai Municipality partnered with Prerana Rehabilitation Center, Sarlahi, to provide him with a wheelchair — a turning point that would soon transform his everyday life.
